Welcome! - Wealdendun's Plot
Wealdendun

With 1700 years of background history, seven continents, and over 20 playable races, Wealdendun is a complete fantasy world RPG experience. Unlike other worlds, where the excitement was in the past, even 'today' Wealdendun battles evil and fights for the future. With magic, swords, and shields the world of Wealdendun comes alive with elves, dragons, mortals, faeries, wolven changelings and more.
Unlike other worlds, dragons do not just breathe fire - some control decay, ice, or healing among others. And unlike other stories, faeries are not small but are a cross between elf and dragon.
One of the last remaining Ieldran, the twelve elves granted powers no others have, Natulcien works to save Wealdendun from the forces of Genipan, another Ieldran once thought dead. Those of the light and those of the dark continually battle as this story continues through the site's members and their interactions.

Swordfighting Challenge

Only a stone's throw away from the Hilderin Barracks building is a patch of ground removed of all vegetation in a large circular area. It is located on the north end so as to not be in the shadow of the barracks. It is here that the mighty Hilderin pair up one-on-one to improve their sword fighting skills. Today, the circle has been prepared for the tournament challenge, completely with ropes to keep non-fighting persons gathered out of the way.

Morgensweg Foremihtig will be resident master of the contest, instructing the competitors and keeping all issues resolved. Please follow her rules, regulations, and watch for her posts that govern key points to the contest.

Posting may begin
. This contest will be judged mainly by quality of RP posts concerning the swordfight. Please assume your character knows how to find the Hildern Barracks and waste not your posts on asking the citizens for directions etc. You may start with general arriving to the contest type posts until Morgensweg posts the beginning of the competition. The first two arrivals will be paired for the first match, and so on. Winners of each match will then be paired off for single elimination. Multiple matches may be RPed at one time. Please follow any instructions Morgensweg may give you to keep your posts easy to follow.

Deren made his way up to the barracks door. It seemed like he was the first for the contest. Well, the king should set an example for others. He kept the Sword of Umdol strapped to his belt, but it would not be used today. It's magic would provide to much of an advantage. He would use his broadsword, which had no magical elements at all. It was just a professionally crafted blade that had served him well in the time his other sword was broken. He decided he'd take the time to find Morgensweg, as he had heard she was running it. This might be a rare oppotunity alone with her. He opened the barracks door and walked in.

As it happened, Deren was not the first to arrive at the barracks. Splinters were already flying from the wooden poles Ayorah was striking with his sword. He was not carrying his usual assortment of blades, instead having brought merely 3. Two of these, a longsword and a claymore, lay on the ground close to him, while a heavy-looking broadsword was held tightly in his hand. His shield was leaning against a wall, and a suit of armour was carelessly strewn on the ground next to it. The mercenary himself was wearing nothing but a pair of baggy trousers and boots, his torso displaying many years' worth of battle scars.
As the king entered, Ayorah looked towards him, nodded in greeting, and continued his practice, striking the poles with an overhead swing, followed by an underarm strike and a backhand twirl, each cutting the post at points only centimetres away.

Alomir leaned on a nearby wall watching his friend Ayorah practice. He wasn't sure if spectators were allowed to be here, he decided he'd watch anyway. Instead of wearing a suit of armor, he was dressed comfortably wearing a long sleeved black tunic and a pair of black leggings of the same, light material.

He would not compete in the this particular event. While he thought of himself as an accomplished swordsman, he knew he would want to save his energy for the mounted events.

Upon seeing King Deren, Alomir bowed as the King passed and then straightened up, turning to Ayorah. "Do you think the King is going to fight? I am sure his Majesty could hold his own. Do you think you could win against him?" He asked Ayorah.

The swings continued, becoming stronger and stronger, until with one swoop the top of the pole was severed from the rest, flying a few metres into a wall, then rolling on the ground for a few more. Satisfied, the mercenary threw his sword with the others, and drank from a waterskin hanging from his belt. As he relaxed his stance, he turned towards Alomir.
"I'd wager so." he answered, extending his waterskin to Alomir in offering of a swig, "The king's an accomplished swordsman, I'll give him that. But he's... what, 20? 22? He lacks experience."
Remembering his friend was also around that age, he quickly added "No offense, of course. You're a mighty good fighter yourself. Shame you ain't participating... I'd wager you'd make it pretty far. But I guess you want to be fresh for the race, right?"

"The king's an accomplished swordsman, I'll give him that. But he's... what, 20? 22? He lacks experience."

"Ah but remember before his Majesty became King he was captain of the guard. So he must have had some measure of talent to become a captain even if he is a royal. Besides, I have heard rumors that he's a half-elf, so he may only look in his twenties."

"No offense, of course. You're a mighty good fighter yourself. Shame you ain't participating... I'd wager you'd make it pretty far. But I guess you want to be fresh for the race, right?"

Alomir smiled at the comment nodding his thanks. "Yup, that's right. I figure the equestrian events are enough for me. I'll be doing the race, the joust, and of probably the hunt." He said finishing, wondering if the hunt would be mounted or not.

((OOC: The Competition will be held OUTSIDE the north wall of the barracks. Thanks :) ))

Picking up her sword belt, Morgensweg turned from the kitchen area of the barracks and buckled her hawk-hilted sword to her waist - the sword of her father, and his father before him. A quick look outside told her that the contest was soon to start, judging by the position of the light filtering through the trees. It was then that she heard the tell-tale sound of the front door opening.

That must be the first contestant, she thought, beginning to step down the long hallway to the front entrance of the barracks wondering why I'm not yet at the battle circle. But when she rounded the corner no ordinary contestant stood before her. It was her King, and though few in the entire land of Wealdndun knew else, her love.

"King Deren," she said in surprise, always caught between respect for her liege and proper etiquette of a Hilderin Captain who also happened to be in love with her King. "I - was not expecting you." She finished with a small smile.

"Have you come to compete?" She hoped his answer was both yes and no. Yes, he had come to compete, but no he had used it as an excuse to visit her. Perhaps it was asking too much of a man already burdened with ruling the mortal lands.

"It is still a bit early, and I was just getting ready to check on the circles that will be used for the battles. You know, the ones at the north end of the building."

She stood in the shadows, the hood of her cloak pulled over her silvery hair as it was more often than not. With arms crossed over her chest she watched, from behind Ayorah's back, the two conversing over something she could barely make out. No matter. She was not here to make small talk, though she wouldn't have known where to being had she made the effort to join. No, Gwendolyn was used to lurking in shadows, hiding her face - her hair - her skin - her name. It was because of this that her mother had adopted the name Nearu, meaning 'hiding' or 'hiding place' - though she had never told Gwendolyn this, the red-eyed female suspected as much.

Her sword, much like a cross between a longsword and a scimitar, was hanging off of her right side under her cloak, its blade nearly 90cm in length. It could be wielded with either one or two-hands, though more often than not Gwendolyn combined both strategies as was taught to her by Jeomus, weapon master and mentor.

The pale-skinned female wasn't sure she wanted to compete, as battles to prove worth in a competition rather than need did not appeal to her. She was also reluctant to have to look into the eyes of a fighter who regarded her appearance as appalling. And conversation - yes, that was another point she wished to avoid. There were many reasons not to participate, but she greatly enjoyed the burn and sweat, the strain and pain that could be caused by a lengthy duel. She would decide soon enough. For now, she continued to stare with seemingly unblinking points of red inside her dark hood.

"Well, good luck!" the mercenary said, as he took another swig from his waterskin. "I might go for the hunt, but I doubt it. I'm only doing this to check out everyone else's skill... even if I won, it would probably be more worth my while to take on a job or two."

He laughed, and began to pick up his items. He'd had enough warming up for today, he was ready to fight. He'd decide on the weapon later, when he saw who he was up against. Ayorah hoped it would be easy rivals for the first few rounds, leaving the truly interesting matches for last. That's the way he liked it when he was a spectator. And as a fighter, it meant he could save his energy for last, when it was most needed. But that would be up to the tournament organisers, and the official rules had not been announced yet, so he couldn't plan ahead. Not yet.

"Alright, that's enough for me. I'm heading to the arena... If you want a front-line seat I can always tell them you're my squire. You can keep my stuff while I'm fighting."

Alomir knew that he had a good seat, since he would sit with his father and all the other nobles. The seats for the nobles were in the shade, and they had cushioned seats. Despite the luxury of the noble section Alomir could never really enjoy the full excitement of the competition unless he was as close as possible.

"That could work, besides I think you could use some good coaching during the breaks. After all you did say that I would have done well in the competition had I entered."
He said looking around at the other participants, seeing how they compared to Ayorah.

As he walked towards the barracks' northern door, he stopped at Alomir's words. He looked back towards him, slightly incredulous at his offer of coaching. He then laughed softly, and turned back towards the door, opening it slightly to gaze outside. People had started to gather in anticipation of the tournament, although it didn't look like fighting was going to start just yet. Nevertheless, he opened it completely and stepped out, making his way slowly towards the circles.

"Alomir, Alomir..." he said, as he walked, "You would have done well, yes. But more through the fire of youth than through experience. You are a competent fighter, but you have much to learn. During these fights, don't speak, just watch. It will do you good."

He dropped his gear in a small area dedicated to the contestants, carefully setting it down for quick changing between blades. He was the first to arrive to the arena, although not under much expectation. Even though the mercenary's name was well known in certain circles, his identity and appearance was not, and those to whom it was tended to be discreet with said knowledge. A few eyes followed his preparations before growing bored and returning to idle chatter. Ayorah knew that the reaction to the King's entrance would be much different... and he was determined to show the crowd just how wrong they were.

Alomir was about to say that he was just a strong as Ayorah, but he knew that Ayorah was right. While Alomir was younger, Ayorah had fought through countless battles. "Sorry."He said simply, feeling like a child that had just been scolded.

As he followed Ayorah towards the hall, he placed his hand on the hilt of his jeweled sword, "One day, I'll be more than just a competent fighter, I will be one of the best." He thought with determination.

((OOC: Hopefully it's still early, seeing as I don't see any fighting has started yet.)

"I would be delighted to check the battle circles with you Morgensweg." Deren said. "I have not decided if I wish to compete yet. I was thinking yes, but now I would rather assist you if you'd let me. Perhaps I will just sit and watch. Though how could I watch a sword fight when a beautiful lady is standing out on the field."

Deren had hoped he wasn't being to straight forward with her. The night on the balcony had been the most romantic they had been. He was hoping for more moments like it since, but war had called. This seemed like the perfect opportunity. Perhaps after the sword contest they could have some more time together too.

"So, do you mind if I join you?" Deren asked. "And maybe after the contest we can disappear for a bit and spend some time together."

Morgensweg was not expecting those type of words to be spoken to her, especially not standing here in the Hilderin Barracks and particularly not from the King himself. She glanced quickly with her lavender eyes to varify that they were indeed alone in the hallway.

She had grown up around males, had been trained as one with the blade and the bow, and as such guarded her emotions in the same manner. Had she been full elven, instead of one fourth, gender would not have been an issue for anything she set her mind on doing. On the balcony that night - oh it seemed so long ago - had been the first time she had opened up in that romantic sort of way. All of this was still very new to her and she was uncertain how to respond.

His words pleased her, for she had partially hoped he would not be competing. She did not know how much time the competition would allow for them to speak to each other, as she was principle judge on the proceedings, but even having him this close for an hour would be a welcomed change.

But she did not know if he spoke out of courtesy, that traditional flattery toward an interesting party, or if he truly felt that she was beautiful.

She gave a crooked smile accompanied by a merry chuckle. "I think the King has hit his head one too many times in battle. He can't possibly be speaking of me as the one with beauty," she teased. "Perhaps it is best if you sit out on this competition. I wouldn't want Your Grace wielding a sword in such a confused state."

Morgensweg just couldn't bring herself to address Deren by his first name. When they had met in Rurisk, she never had learned his true name. And when he took the throne of Tir Rathon, it wasn't until she watched the coronation ceremony that she saw who the new King really was. Her heart broke at that moment, feeling slightly betrayed at never knowing this part of his life, and knowing that if her feelings were true there was a slim chance of ever getting close to him again. Luckily her heart had mended, pledging her faith to her King and starting the Hilderin once more, and she had come to realize that he cared for her still.

Morgensweg shook her head, her golden hair moving slightly. "I do not mind at all. I would love for you to accompany me, and maybe you can help me judge the competition." She paused, locking her lavendar eyes on his. "Spending time with you afterward will be the best part." She flashed him a smile.

"Oh, I better send word to the competitors that the tournament is about to start."

Quickly stepping to the front entrance of the barracks, Morgensweg opened the door and touched the arm of the Pursuivant standing there. "Please make the announcement at the circles that the tournament will start in ten minutes, and that we are on our way." At the mention of 'we' the Pursuivant breifly looked to see who else the Captain was referring too, then sped off on his way.

Morgensweg turned back into the barracks and looked at Deren.

"Well, shall we go?"

She decided to follow, and as she uncrossed her arms and began to move silently out of the practice area and into the sun she decided that she would indeed compete. She doubted there would be any reason for the two dirks hidden in her boot, as these weapons were not commonly used in battle - in a pinch they were handy, but no one wanted to watch a tournament of dirk-poking. Still, if they decided to have a mini competition of knife throwing, or the like, she would have them with her. Besides, their familiar coldness in her boots was comforting.

Gwendolyn made her way to the arena and moved into position beside Ayorah. Turning to look at him with only part of her face, her red eyes looking out of their corners at him she spoke.

"Greetings, Ayorah."

That was all - no bubbly excitement of finding her ally here, no forced conversation about the weather just to hear their voices.

She began to stretch nearly every muscle in her body, from her neck to her ankles, all the while keeping her hood over her head hiding her nature from the large crowd.

"What are the stipulations of the competition?" She asked finally.
