With 1700 years of background history, seven continents, and over 20 playable races, Wealdendun is a complete fantasy world RPG experience. Unlike other worlds, where the excitement was in the past, even 'today' Wealdendun battles evil and fights for the future. With magic, swords, and shields the world of Wealdendun comes alive with elves, dragons, mortals, faeries, wolven changelings and more. Unlike other worlds, dragons do not just breathe fire - some control decay, ice, or healing among others. And unlike other stories, faeries are not small but are a cross between elf and dragon. One of the last remaining Ieldran, the twelve elves granted powers no others have, Natulcien works to save Wealdendun from the forces of Genipan, another Ieldran once thought dead. Those of the light and those of the dark continually battle as this story continues through the site's members and their interactions.

Tri-country Horse Race « Thread Started on Jan 3, 2009, 8:07pm »
Day Three of the Fallen Warriors Tournament 07:00 - Begins at the Hilderin Barracks Tri-country Horse Race
The sun was rising, only one sun Elid with his white-ish yellow rays, to the east of the barracks. Natulcien hoped that Nydelid would choose to not rise this day, for it would make for an extremely hot race. The riders were gathering and soon the great Tri-country Horse Race would begin.
The horses and their riders were to start from the east side of the barracks and follow the trail toward the Elid Caliž Province which would cross them into the country of Rurisk, the land of the elves.
From there the horse riders will turn north toward Snyttrund, just barely crossing into that country near the first Correspondence Cabin there (part of the Flying Hawk Post system).
The course will then turn them south west and the riders will ride to the Lone Mountain and the forest that surrounds it, taking them into the third country of this race.
After reaching the land of Fišere Nidun, the riders will once more return to the Tir Rathon barracks south south-west which serves as both start and end of the race.
I, Natulcien Fiothiel, will be resident master of the contest, instructing the competitors and keeping all issues resolved. Please follow my rules, regulations, and watch for my posts that govern key points to the contest.
At each location, Elid Caliž Province, Snyttrund Correspondence Cabin, and Fišere Nidun Forest there will be a flag that you must take in order to verify that you have indeed ridden to all three countries and not shortened your race unfairly. You must return all three flags upon crossing the finish line to Natulcien to claim your prize.
How you get to each location is entirely up to you, as you may use any of the Earstan paths, trade routes, or forge your own trail.
I will be posting key events for each character concerned. For example, I may make a post saying that "Morgensweg's horse got tangled up in a briar patch causing a delay" or "Deren's horse was passed by Deirdré, though he could not know as her path was not very close to his". Your job is to RP your way out of such situations, RP to the best of your ability from one place to the other, watching for key posts by me to change or alter your course, position, etc. and making your pursuit of the goal believable.
When you reach a check-in point, I will declare who has picked up the flag and when as well as describe what the flag looks like. I will be watching how everyone RPs, and as the event gets closer to the end, I will pick the one who will win the race based on previous writings. Part of this competition depends on my random selection of set-backs, etc, but it also depends on your ability to RP in such situations.
If you want to make your own obstacles to tackle, this is fine - however, it will not excuse you from having obstacles that I create. If you would like to post that you see another character, have words with said character, etc, this is fine as well. But rest assured, if anyone tries to sabotage another rider, eventually your punishment will find its way to you. The elves have a phrase not unlike "what is once dealt shall eventually be received". I cannot, as a character, see when such unsportsmanlike like behavior occurs, but Meotod can.
Randomly I will make my posts concerning the order of the horses/riders, so continue to post as you see fit concerning what position you think you are in, what riders you see/don't see, or the like. Randomly I will make my set-backs, advancements, obstacles, and lucky-breaks posts. So keep a weary eye out for those! I will post them in bold.
Posting may begin. It is time. Gather your horses here, greet your fellow competitors, and compose yourself for a long, hard journey. Soon I will drop the scarf to signal the begin of the race. May the best horse, and horse-rider, prevail

Morgensweg rode in on Brunmearh, her brown mare with a shining coat. She had named the mare "Glistening Horse" when she was young, dispite the teasing her good friend Turen gave on the manner of it being a "rather uninspired name, don't you think?". The father of Brunmearh had been Wręc's horse, Morgensweg's father.
Riding in wasn't particularly how she came, as she rode more around the barracks from the stables where her mighty horse was kept to the eastern side of the area. Her horse wasn't remarkable in appearance or coat, but she had amazingly strong legs and muscles and had proved herself time and time again in battle and long journeys.
Morgensweg took note of the many horses gathered already, and she wondered if there might be any chance of injury for so many horses going in one direction unorganized. Without another thought, she coaxed Brunmearh to move with a four-beat gait into position at the starting line, looking around for any that she knew.

Sir Alomir walked towards the barracks, he was gently leading a beautiful strong mare who wore a beautiful caparison, which bore the Orsoan family crest. Alomir looked back at his horse, and was met by her dark brown intelligent eyes. He stopped for a moment to give her a gentle rub on her long muscled neck. After several moments he continued towards the barracks in silence.
He observed the weather glad that he had chosen to wear a light green hunting outfit that was made from a light and comfortable material. Since the weather was unpredictable he also wore a long dark green cloak that had a thick hood that could be pulled up in the event of poor weather. As for his boots, they were a pair of old riding boots that would offer good protection for his feet.
As he approached the place where most of the horses and riders were gathering he turned to see the face of Ian, one of his father's servants. "Sir, I have already registered you and Emogen for the race." He said happily eyeing the beautiful mare.
"Thank you Ian. I am glad to see that my father sent you." He said with a smile, Ian was the stable master of the Orsoan Estate and was a good natured man who had always loved horses. "Would you give me a hand with this caparison?" He asked as he began to remove the cloth from Emogen's back.
About fifteen minutes later, Alomir and Ian has successfully saddled her and prepared all the necessary equipment that should hold them until they had completed the first leg of the race.
Alomir turned towards Ian and smiled, giving him a simple nod before he mounted Emogen and urged her into a gentle trot to where the others where gathered.
He did not recognize many of the participants but he did notice Morgensweg, the Captain of the Hilderin. He made a polite inclination of his head before taking his place at the starting line.
((OOC: Once they reach one of the check-in points, are they going to stay the night and get food? Or is that up to the rider as he or she goes along? This journey is not going to be completed in a single day? That would be a little bit far to complete in a single day...))

Ithiliel trotted Luthien to the barracks, nervous but excited. She had her black hair in a braid, her pointed ears framing her hairline. She had on her usual sleeveless black dress, the skirt expanded enough to ride in. But instead of her usual simple slippers, she had on black riding boots. Her cloak of the same color as everything else was strapped around her shoulders, hood down.
Luthien was a pure white in contrast to the black clothing of her rider. Instead of a saddle, she bore a blue woven blanket, made the right size to fix on a horse's back. She bore no reins, her rider had the strength to stay on without holding onto those silly straps. All she needed was her trusted horse and the want to fly. "Fly fast today, Luthien," she whispered to her horse. "Fly fast. Perhaps my parents are watching me from wherever they are. Fly fast so that we may make them proud." she said, fingering her silver locket.
There were other riders there of course, but Ithiliel didn't pay much attention to them. Not out of spite, her mind was just preoccupied with the coming task. She wondered what obstacles would come up. She had ridden enough to know that such a long ride would bring natural traps sooner or later. She guided Luthien to the starting point, relaxing a bit before she had to ride. Her dagger strap loosened on her leg, after having been pressed up firmly from her holding on with her legs to her horse. This was the only weapon she carried, but it had yet to fail her. As she leaned down to lay on her belly on top her horse, she wondered if she would see anyone she knew.

Her horse, if it could be called by such an incorrect word, was nearly seventeen hands tall - something that could never be called small unless in a world full of giants. She had a coat of silvery white that bordered on a shinning pearl color, but her mane and tail was full of lavender and pale blue colors, very much like her rider and the rider's sprite who as the same color in either the hair or the wings. She walked proud, the hair around her hooves much longer and fuller than the rest of her leg giving her the look of horse-boots. And on her forehead was long, spiraling, horn tinted ever-so-weakly with lavender and flicked with sparkles like metallic confetti.
This was the only horse Nihtleoš had ever ridden on, and she only now thought of the problems the other riders might cause seeing that she had an armed horse, though the Unicorn would never attack any of them. She would defend, but attacking for the soul purpose of just that was not in her. This very unicorn was the one that had given Nihtleoš back her life when she had died in the massacre of her village many, many year ago. The tears of a Unicorn were the things of legends.
Nihtleoš rode up to Ithiliel and moved to stand her Unicorn beside her friend from the Night Forest. She had seen her arrive and had made her way behind the lines to greet her.
"Greetings! I am so very glad to see you here. Are you ready for the race? I have never done anything like this in my entire life - at least, that I can remember."

Alomir glanced at the pair of night elves, but even stranger than two night elves in one place was the fact that one of them was sitting astride a unicorn. For as long as he could remember he had seen pictures of them in storybooks, he had never seen one up close. And he knew this could be his only chance to see one.
He eased Emogen into a slow walk towards the pair of night elves, his eyes inspected the unicorn. He made a polite inclination of his head before addressing the ladies, "Greetings, you must excuse my amazement. Living in Tir Rathon we do not see many Night Elves, and if there are, there are hardly ever two in the same place."He paused allowing a tiny smile to cross his face. "And I could not help but notice both of you are riding fine steeds. I am particularly interested in your unicorn." He said to the young Night Elf who was sitting on the unicorn's back.

Ithiliel smiled happily at the sight of her friend Nihtleoš. "Hello! We've never been in an organized race like this," she said, speaking for both herself and Luthien. "We have only raced with some of the humans from my village. We usually won," she said, beaming down at her trusted steed. "We are both very excited. Even if we don't win, we'll do our best. We will make my parents proud," she said, again laying her hand on her locket for a moment. She turned away from her companion as a human male came over to them, surprised to see two night elves. "Hello!" she greeted him with a kind smile. "I'm Ithiliel and this is my friend and steed Luthien." she introduced, stroking Luthien's neck. "Although you are surprised by the sight of us, I was probably much closer to you than you thought. I grew up in a small human village, although I do not know how far away it is from Tir Rathon."

Trinity walked along with her horse, Snow. She looked around nervously, finding all kinds of races in the area. Some glared at her, wondering what a Wizard was doing in a horse race. She blushed, looking away, trying to find a friendly face in the mob of racers. Her horse snorted softly, nudging her for comfort.
She smiled, stroking Snow's brown mane. Trinity tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. Currently, her hair was down, but when the race was nearing its beginning, she would tie it up in a long purple ribbon. She picked a spot, a little off from everybody else. She glanced at a human and a pair of night elves, who looked friendly among themselves. She stroked Snow, smiling at her horse who had been her faithful companion.
"We'll make it through this. We don't have to win, let's just enjoy a little excitement!" Trinity told her horse, laughing a little. She really actually joined just to get the feeling of being in a race. She didn't care about the prize, she was here to gain more knowledge. A national horse race was the perfect opportunity to get a feel for culture.

"I've never actually raced, ever," Nihtleoš whispered to Ithiliel so that hopefully no others would hear her. The unicorn tossed her mane slightly, as if understanding the communication between the two Night Elves. Nihtleoš did not have a name for the Unicorn, and as the two did not speak the same language, she couldn't very well ask her and hope to understand the reply. But Nihtleoš felt odd not being able to call her by any sort of name and had lately started to call her "dear girl" or "pretty lady". She patted the unicorn's side as she thought this.
"I really hope I don't make a fool of us, but I'm sure this dear girl knows what she is doing." Nihtleoš smiled then turned her eyes to the newcomer; she hated to dwell on her own shortcomings, mainly her apparent innate clumsiness.
"Oh - well met, mortal of Tir Rathon! I bring greetings from the realm of the east and the Night Forest. This is the first time I have ever been to Wealdendun, and it is very different from the land I have known my home for over a decade. This day light is so queer in comparison with the light of the moon. I think I will have to ride around with my eyes half shut to keep from getting a splitting headache. Everything is so bright, and the shadows are all wrong!"
Meanwhile, Acacia, Nihtleoš's sprite, began investigating the first mortal they had come in close proximity to, zipping around his head and quite literally making a nuisance of herself. "He's kind of cute! Acacia thought at Nihtleoš.
"What?" She replied. "How would you know? What's cute to an elf is not at all what is cute to a sprite."
"And how do you know what is cute to a sprite? I find this human interesting."
"This is the first mortal we've come across, so don't jump to conclusions. Besides, he has funny ears.
Both Nihtleoš and Acacia fought to suppress laughter, though Acacia hardly succeeded as musical laughter escaped her nose. Clearing her throught, Nihtleoš spoke again to Alomir.
"She is not my unicorn, in the sense that I have some ownership over her. We are more like friends - friends in the sense that this pretty lady always seems to find me when I least expect it. This time, she transported me here for the competition, though I had no idea it was even going on."
"I believe that unicorns are non-existent on this continent, yes? However, I have heard of elf-horses - do you know of this legend?" Nihtleoš continued inquisitively.
Noticing a white horse out of the corner of her eye, Nihtleoš briefly turned to get a better look and smiled at the female sitting there. She couldn't tell if Trinity had caught her look before she began looking at her horse once more. Nihtleoš turned back to those having a conversation with her, idly wandering at the many different faces and races gathered here.

"It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Sir Alomir Orsoan of Tir Rathon." He said introducing himself. As he listened to the night elves was surprised to hear that the night elf named, Ithiliel had grown up in a human village. "Now how does a night elf manage to find herself raised by humans?" He thought to himself and was tempted to ask, but realized that he had only just met her and it would be rude to ask her of her personal history so shortly after meeting her. As Alomir turned to the second elf he thought he heard a faint laughter but dismissed it quickly. He smiled as the second night elf, commented on how bright this land was, he assumed that the Nigh Forest was not just a name and might very well be dark at all times. "Ah, I suppose if your eyes are not accustomed to the light here, it may be very uncomfortable." He said.
"I guess that means that she'll be more comfortable riding during the night. Besides I am not sure how swift unicorns are. Either way I'll have to try and keep my eye on her." He thought to himself.
He snapped back from his thoughts as the night elf asked a second question about the elven horses. "I am afraid that I am not familiar with many elf legends." He said then an idea formed, it was always nice to make new friends. "Maybe if you are in the area for a few days after the race, perhaps you two ladies might join me for dinner one night and share some of them with me." He said looking at both night elves.

((OOC: Oh yes, each check point can be used as a resting point. It would be suicide to try and reach all three countries in one day. Technically reaching Snyttrund from anywhere in the Rurisk country in one day is impossible. But, for this tournament, we don't have to spend days upon days of racing in our posts. We will pretend that each place can be reached in less than three days.))
Natulcien had spent some time greeting the riders and their horses as the last minute arrivals lined up at the starting line. There were many, many horses and some of them were not doing too well in the tight area between bodies. She had caught a glimpse of Morgensweg and sent her a brief thought of greeting as she was unable to reach her, she knew, before the contest would begin.
Glancing at Elid, Natulcien knew the position signified 7:00 and she distanced herself from the front of the line, managing as close to center as she could. Water began to bubble at her feet, nearly unnoticeable from an unknown source. Increasing the strength, the water began to rise slowly, pushing Natulcien into the air in a slow, graceful column of nearly white water. She rose high enough for all to see her in every direction, including those watchers standing behind the horses. The waters cascaded beneath her returning to the source then cycling back up to reach the bottoms of her feet once more, holding her aloft in a quiet waterfall.
She smiled down at everyone, glancing here and there to make certain that she held everyone's attention. Then, from within her sleeve she drew out a long, thin and translucent blue scarf. Tied to the end by a nearly invisible string was a rock, and holding the object by that rock - arm extended from the shoulder - Natulcien let the fabric wave gently on the air currents for all to see.
Then, with no warning, she dropped the rock, letting the scarf plummet to the ground. The race had begun!
Natulcien controlled the water as to not hinder any rider, but she stayed aloft watching the many, many horses take off.

Alomir was a little disappointed he could not continue his conversation with the night elves further. "It would appear as though The Majestic Queen Fiothiel is about to make an announcement. I am afraid I must take my leave now, may Meotod smile upon you during this race." He said formally, making another polite dip of his head before turning Emogen around and directing her to an open gap between the group of participants.
He turned his head to the left so he could see the queen clearly. She made deliberate and graceful movements, and it was clear that she was accustomed to formal events such as this. She appeared to be in her twenties, but he remembered that she was probably much older than everything around them. Older than the Barracks, and was probably older than even the patriarchs of the ancient families. As the Elf Queen began to rise on a pillar of water, he felt Emogen stir beneath him nervously, "Easy, easy." He whispered and the mare stopped moving.
For a few moments, as Alomir gazed up at Queen Fiothiel he was aware of his rapid heart beat the race would begin at any second. He waited for the signal anxiously, just when he was sure that his heart would burst from the excitement, he saw the stone fall and hit the ground.
Alomir clicked his heels against Emogen's sides, yelling out in excitement as the brown mare took off, his long green cloak snapped and billowed behind him with the rushing wind. He held on to the reigns tightly as they continued to gallop down the course trying to keep towards the front of the group of rushing horses. The goal was not to be in first place in the beginning it was to be able to keep your sights on the lead horse, and from what he could tell he had done an excellent job.

Ithiliel bowed her head in farewell of the human called Alomir, and gently guided Luthien to a gap in the starting line, beside Nihtleoš. Turning to her friend with a smile she whispered her good luck and turned back around to see the queen better. She was surprised to see her up on a huge pillar of water. "Wow," she said softly. She watched her intently until she brought the stone out, then her eyes were fixed only on the stone.
When the stone dropped, Luthien already knew that the race had begun and without need of a starting call from her rider, began shooting forward. Ithiliel had a look of pure glee on her face, how she loved riding Luthien. She remembered when Luthien had been born, though it seemed like so long ago. She had been a birthday gift from her uncle when she had turned 12. Since then, she had almost mastered the art of riding. Holding on tightly with her legs, and gently with her hands gripping the mare's billowing white hair, she let out a cry of glee as rider and horse started to fly.
((figuratively. don't worry I won't start flying on you!))

Trinity watched as the honorable Queen approached the front of the line. She smiled, knowing the race was about to begin. The Queen wouldn't do something like that unless the race was about to start, it was simple common sense. Trinity mounted Snow, not the most graceful, but she got up.
She gasped in awe as the pillar of water rose into the air, wishing she could do that. Her pillar wouldn't go that high, and it would splatter all over the place. She grinned sheepishly, and gripped the reins. Her heart skipped a beat and worked furiously to contain her excitement. She wasn't racing to win the trophy. No, her prize would be much greater.
Trinity tied up her hair in her purple ribbon, and then gripped the reins. Everything happened at nearly the same time. The rock fell to the ground and every single rider shot off, heading for the same place, trying to win the same prize. It took Trinity a second longer to figure out it was time to go. Her reaction time was not good. She spurred Snow on, and with a jolt, they were running with the crowd of horses.
Trinity giggled as she felt the wind go through her face, and her cloak billowed out behind her. Snow moved up and down fiercely, running with all her heart. She knew this event was important. Trinity closed her eyes for a moment, her expression peaceful and happy. She felt like her heart was about to burst from excitement.
Trinity reopened her eyes, and her expression turned confused. Was it against the rules for a horse to fly? Snow whined, but Trinity stroked her mane.
"Keep going, girl, we're here for the experience. I don't think we've ever seen a flying horse!" Trinity said. She looked back, realizing it was one of the Night Elves she had seen earlier. Lucky girl.

The horses began the race as Natulcien used her water pillar to rotate her body to watch the riders vanish into the woods. She silently prayed that they would not push their mounts at such a pace for too long, as no horse could travel at top speed non-stop to the first check point. Hopefully some of the riders had participated in an event like this and the new racers would take their lead for resting and walking paces.
Alomir was pulling ahead, although he was still behind three lead horses. Following closely behind him, and to his right came Morgensweg, who was followed closely by Ithiliel in the order of things. Suddenly Trinity found the legs of her horse coming dangerously close to being tangled up with the horse to her left. Nihtleoš's unicorn had a delayed start and was galloping behind the above mentioned riders, although she was not last in the pack.
